Prefold cloth diapers started out as a big square of one layer of cotton fabric. Flat diapers require folding to get several layers of cotton in the wetting zone. Prefolds, however, have been folded and stitched to put the absorbency where you need it. These diaper service quality cotton prefolds have been stitched into the premium level of absorbency, as indicated in the chart below. Layering refers to the number of layers in each of the 3 "panels" of the prefold. The most layers are in the middle panel.
